Integrated Preschool Program
Applications are now available for the Maywood School District’s Integrated Preschool Program for the 2010-2011 school year.
The program differs from other preschools because it incorporates the education of special education preschoolers with that of general education preschoolers.  The general education students will be selected by lottery if the number of applicants exceeds the available spaces. We anticipate openings for six students in the program.
The teacher of the class is certified in both general and special education.  She will plan nurturing early childhood experiences focusing on kindergarten readiness (pre-reading skills, math, and science concepts), social interaction, movement activities, and play skills.
All children in the program attend classes five days a week.  The anticipated hours will be from 12:40 – 3:05 PM.  Tuition will be charged for the program, in which all students attend classes five afternoons per week at the rate of $2500.00
To be eligible, a general education student must be four years of age on or before October 1, 2010 and toilet-trained.  A birth certificate, a copy of immunization records, a medical exam and proof of Maywood residency will be required of those students admitted to the program.
Applications are available at the Department of Special Services, Maywood Avenue School. They will be accepted through April 15, 2010.
For further information, call the Department of Special Services 201-845-9110, Ext. 120.

Buddies of New Jersey Needs
Your Help
Buddies of New Jersey, (NJB), a non-profit community-based organization, is a resource center offering a network of support for people infected and affected by HIV/Aids.  Our Town Newspaper and Jessica Hornes have joined forces to help replenish their food bank.  The food bank is located at the Franklin A. Smith Resource Center (149 Hudson Street, Hackensack) and is available to all New Jersey Buddies clients.  The Food Bank provides nonperishable canned or dry goods to insure clients receive adequate nutritional support, it also provides toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, and soap along with snacks for the children, such as cookies, cakes, candies, and special treats, all through grants and private donations.
When a person in Bergen County is infected with HIV/Aids, there is no public assistance with medication that is vital for their existence.  Their health insurance, if they are employed, does not cover them because it is considered a pre-existing condition. So, most or all of their income is spent on this life-saving medication, therefore leaving very little or none for food and toiletries.
That is why we, at the Our Town, along with Jessica have teamed up with NJB.   We are asking our readers to help us in our quest to bring food to the Buddies of New Jersey Food Bank in Hackensack. To donate non-perishable canned and dry foods or toiletries and snacks, you can leave your donations at our office at: 19 West Pleasant Avenue for delivery to the food bank.
For more information, you can contact us at 201-843-5700 or visit Buddies at www.njbuddies.org.
